Thanks to generous grants from Dr Thomas Cranston Wilson Charitable Trust, The Hospital Saturday Fund, Zurich Community Trust, as well as public donations; we have been able to invest £30,000 in state-of-the-art Scalp Cooling Systems for our Day Therapy Unit.
Scalp cooling is offered to patients on certain chemotherapy regimes and can prevent damage to hair follicles.
Losing your hair is often cited as one of the most feared side effect of chemotherapy treatment. The opportunity to retain hair during treatment can offer patients a chance to retain a sense of privacy and to feel more like their normal self at a very difficult time.
The Great Western Hospital is the first UK Hospital to receive the very latest Paxman PSCS system and is proud to offer this service to patients thanks to generous charitable donations given to Brighter Futures.
A huge thank you to everyone who has supported our fundraising.
“I cold capped during my chemotherapy, I didn’t find it too cold and had great success keeping 80% of my hair. It does add a little time to your treatment but well worth giving it a try. You already have so many other side-effects you are coping with, losing your hair doesn’t need to be one of them. Although not essential part of treatment it is without doubt a real bonus for me to keep my hair. Thank you to Brighter Futures for fundraising to replace the machines for many going through treatment in the future.”
Helen Simpson, recent Great Western Hospital Patient who tried Scalp Cooling.
