Joe's Story

Joe started fundraising for Brighter Futures in early 2022, choosing to fundraise for ICU as a thank you for the care that the team gave his Dad, Gary in his final days. Gary lost his fight with leukemia in January 2022 and Joe decided to walk 52 miles on 2nd June 2022, which would have been Gary’s 52nd birthday.

Starting from outside Newbury at 3am, Joe’s route would take him back towards Swindon. Along the way Joe’s family and friends will join him to celebrate Gary’s birthday.

Below Joe says what this challenge means to him.

“In these tough times I have decided to do something positive, by raising some money in his memory. The plan is to celebrate his 52nd Birthday on the 2nd of June by walking 52 miles. Dad spent his final days in the Intensive Care Unit in GWH Swindon. The nurses there worked so incredibly hard and were remarkable in their ability to not only take care of Dad, but take care of us as a family as well. Therefore I wanted to give something back by raising as much money for them as I could”

Joe has so far raised over £5,000 for the ICU. Joe finished the walk in 20.5 hours, with the weather on his side!
